Digital Loyalty Cards for Small Businesses

What a digital loyalty card is, how customers join, what staff do, what it costs, and which independent businesses get the most out of one.
A digital loyalty card is a stamp or points card that lives on your customer's phone instead of in their wallet. For most independent businesses the best version is a wallet pass — it sits in Apple Wallet or Google Pay, needs no app download, and updates itself every time a stamp is added.
This guide explains what these cards are, how they work day to day, how they compare with paper and with apps, what they cost, and which kinds of business benefit most.
What a digital loyalty card is
It is the same idea as the card you stamp at the till, with three differences: it cannot be lost, it cannot be forged with a rubber stamp, and it tells you who is holding it. That last point is the one most owners underestimate — a paper card collects no information at all, so you never learn who your regulars are or how to reach them.
How customers join
- Scan a QR code at the counter or tap a link you shared.
- Enter a name and email.
- Add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Pay.
You get a link and a QR code to use however you like: printed by the till, in your Instagram bio, or texted to regulars.
How staff issue stamps
Staff sign in on their own phones and scan the customer's QR code. A stamp is added instantly. By default a customer can earn one stamp per day, which stops a single visit being stamped five times; staff can override that deliberately when there is a genuine reason, and the override is recorded against the visit.
Digital versus paper versus an app
| Paper card | Wallet pass | Your own app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer installs anything | No | No | Yes |
| Can be lost | Easily | No | No |
| You learn who the customer is | Never | Yes | Yes |
| Can you message them | No | Free wallet push | Yes |
| Forgery risk | High | Low | Low |
| Changing the offer | Reprint everything | Instant | App update |
| Setup cost | Printing | Subscription | Build cost |
What it costs
- Digital Loyalty: £34.99 per month, covering your first branch.
- Ambassador referral add-on: £24.99 per month, optional, requires the base plan.
- Extra branches: £10 per month each.
- SMS: separate pay-as-you-go credit, because each message costs to send.
- First 7 days free, nothing charged until day 8.
Whether that pays back depends on your own numbers — what a returning customer is worth to you, and how many of your regulars join. Nobody can tell you that in advance, which is exactly what the free trial is for.
Which businesses benefit most
Loyalty works where customers come back often enough for progress to feel achievable: cafés, coffee shops, barbers, salons, bakeries, takeaways, nail bars, pubs and small retail. If a typical customer visits twice a year, a stamp card will not change their behaviour and you should not buy one.
Benefits
- You find out who your regulars are, and can reach them for free.
- Progress is visible on the phone, which is what makes people come back to finish a card.
- Nothing to reprint when you change the reward.
- Works across multiple locations under one programme.
- The customer list belongs to you and can be exported.
Limitations
- It cannot make infrequent customers frequent.
- A reward that is too generous will cost you more than the visit is worth.
- Staff have to actually ask customers to scan — take-up follows the counter, not the software.
- It does not integrate with your till; stamping is a separate action on a phone.
Best for
- Independent cafés, coffee shops, bakeries and takeaways.
- Barbers, hair and nail salons, and beauty studios.
- Small retail with regulars rather than one-off shoppers.
- Businesses with one to a handful of branches.
Not suitable if
- You need a deeply integrated POS points scheme where the till calculates everything.
- You operate across several countries or need enterprise-grade reporting.
- You want highly complex tiered rewards with many levels and conditions.
- Your customers genuinely do not come back often — fix that first.
- You need an app with ordering or payment built in.
Setup checklist
- Choose stamps per visit or points per pound.
- Set the card length and the reward.
- Add a milestone reward part-way through.
- Upload your logo and set your colours.
- Share the link and QR code in store and online.
- Train staff on the scanner — it takes a few minutes.
- Watch the first week and adjust the reward if nobody is finishing.
A worked cost example
Clearly labelled assumptions, not a promise. Say a café's plan costs £34.99 a month and a returning customer spends £6 on a visit with roughly half of that as gross margin. Covering the subscription then needs about 12 extra profitable visits a month across the whole customer base — around three a week. Whether you get them depends on your customers, your reward and whether staff ask. Put your own numbers in during the free trial rather than trusting this one.
Common questions
Do I need special hardware?
No. Staff use the scanner app on a phone or tablet they already have.
Can I change the number of stamps later?
Yes. Cards can be 4 to 20 stamps and you can change it afterwards.
Can I reward customers part-way through?
Yes — you can set a milestone that unlocks a smaller reward before the card is full, which is usually what keeps people going.
Design your card and see it as a real Apple and Google Wallet pass before you commit to anything.
